Historically, playing cards had been used for divination, similar to tarot cards (which also have four suits, number and face cards). Further research revealed that each suit was linked to a specific element: hearts to water, spades to air, diamonds to earth, and clubs to fire. Discontent and discomfort happen whether we like it or not, and sometimes just being in that moment is the best we can do. Hygge is the Danish word for coziness or contentedness. It is an increasingly popular lifestyle trend in North America, marketed as the “Scandinavian secret to happiness”. This book looks at the way this idea is sold in terms of lifestyle curation on social media and publishing. I am contrasting “hygge” with it’s opposite “uhygge”, which means spooky or unsettling.
